SoCal, Neutral Bay

Our next door neighbour told us that she had the best margarita at SoCal which is just a short walk away from our place. We had to check it out once the restrictions were slightly lifted.

And she was right. They make mean margarita there and the tacos are pretty decent, too. Here’s what we had on multiple trips:

green sprouts vegetarian, neutral bay

When Chinese vegetarian done properly, it can be quite spectacular. Green Sprouts Vegetarian is one of those places. It’s a bit like food from Bodhi and Green Gourmet had a brand-new baby together. Only better.

Green Sprouts Vegetarian is the new place just opened pretty much three blocks away from our home. Funny enough, it is the exact spot where Makan by Chef Tan with a vegan menu was before. Basically, it is on the second floor of The Grove, just above Iku and right next to Dymocks in Neutral Bay village.

The food here is Chinese vegan with gluten free options. It is fresh and full of flavour. The portions are big. We deliberately order more than we can eat in one go as certain dishes make good lunches the next day—like Singapore noodles.
Based on our conversation with Carmen (the owner of Green Sprouts Vegetarian), they make some of their own mock-meats in the premises and the others come from a reputable brand. Their chef previously worked at Bodhi. So, that explains a lot.
We have had take-aways twice so far and tried to sample different dishes each time, except for Singapore noodles. Green Sprouts’ Singapore noodles are so hard to pass by.

Here’s the list of what we tried so far:
• Peking not-duck
• Beetroot dumplings
• King mushroom, sweet corn and ginger dumplings
• Salt and pepper squid (calamari)
• Singapore noodles
• Mongolian beef
• Lemon chicken
• Ma po tofu

One of the things I must mention here is the staff is incredibly friendly and warm. Lyn, in particular, and she is the manager of Green Sprouts Vegetarian. We are definitely going back. No doubt about that. Love the idea of supporting a local vegan business, especially when their food is that good. I’m telling you guys; you must definitely try Green Sprouts Vegetarian. You can thank me later.

Hanoi on Manning – Kiama, NSW

Hanoi on Manning is a Vietnamese Restaurant on Manning Street in Kiama. We dropped in for lunch on our way to Jervis Bay as my husband had a gig there. I’d never been that part of NSW before so it was all new to me.

Hanoi on Manning has a few options for vegetarians and vegans on their menu and the reviews are very good, too. I must admit the waitress who served us that day (28 February 2020) was particularly friendly.

Okay, here’s what we had:

Fresh rice paper rolls with tofu, vermicelli and fresh herbs.

Vietnamese pancake with mushroom, tofu, beansprouts and mung bean. We had this dish at Loving Hut, Cabramatta for the first time and enjoyed it very much.

I had just got back from Germany with a sore throat so this ginger and lemongrass tea helped me a lot.
